Disaster Preparedness Week - Day 2

Day 2: Personal Items

Welcome to day 2 of Preparedness Week! Today we will be going over some personal items that you can collect around your house to help you get out of your home in under 5 minutes.

If you have not completed day 1, do that first.

Personal Go-Bag

Find a sturdy bag that you can put the following items in:

  1. Cash - In an emergency, power may be out and you will need cash to make purchases. How much to keep in your home will vary based on your personal circumstances. A good rule of thumb would be to have 2-4 weeks of expenses in $5, $10, and $20 bills. If you can’t set that aside right now, start with something and set a reminder to set another amount aside every paycheck until you reach your target.
  2. Spare Car Key - If this is cost-prohibitive, you can commit as a household to store your car keys in a specific place in your home.
  3. Phone Chargers - Keep a charger for each device that you will have with you.
  4. Clothing - Include a sturdy pair of shoes, a jacket, and a full change of clothes including long pants and a long sleeve shirt for each person in your home. You should also include a small blanket. Be sure to tailor your clothing to your climate.

Once you collected these items, place the bag next to your emergency kit. You want to go to a single location in your home to grab your essentials if you need to leave your home in a hurry.
